In the 17th century, when the Church addresses the faithful in Latin and governs through the strictness of doctrine, one friar breaks all the rules. He is Fra Leopoldo da Casamacchia (Pierfrancesco Favino).
With simple words and overwhelming enthusiasm, he preaches the Gospel as good news capable of restoring hope, comfort and joy. His is a God who is close to people, sharing their suffering as well as their humanity. From village to village, his sermons attract increasingly larger crowds. Thousands of people follow him, while churches begin to empty. Such popular support does not go unnoticed.
News reaches Rome, where such a free and independent voice is perceived as a threat to a power founded on authority and fear. The Pope entrusts the case to Cardinal Maculani (Silvio Orlando), the most influential inquisitor of his time. And so, what begins as a simple trial turns into a confrontation destined to bring down certainties that once seemed unshakable.
As Fra Leopoldo's fate appears sealed, Maculani's own path takes an unexpected turn. For while a man can be silenced, what his words have awakened in the hearts of others cannot be erased.
