Green Encounters: Kepos Project

The Kepos Project – Archaeology and Landscape Meetings returns, the annual series of conferences promoted by the William Walton Foundation and Giardini La Mortella. Through an interdisciplinary approach, the project offers an opportunity to reflect on Italy’s and the international community’s extraordinary cultural heritage. Curated by Dr Mariangela Catuogno, this year’s series is dedicated to the centenary of Lady Walton’s birth and to her extraordinary work as the creator of the Giardini La Mortella.

The next event will be held on Thursday 17 at 7:00 p.m. at the Villa Arbusto Museum Complex and will focus on the theme “Pithekoussai and Cumae: Stories and Interconnections at the Dawn of Magna Graecia.”

Valentino Nizzo, Professor of Etruscology at the University of Naples “L’Orientale,” will speak with a presentation entitled “Before the Dawn of Magna Graecia: Archaeology and the Stories of Archaeologists from Pre-Hellenic Cumae to Pithekoussai.” This will be followed by Matteo D’Acunto, Full Professor of Classical Archaeology at the University of Naples “L’Orientale,” with a presentation entitled “Stories from the Earth: Cumae from the Pre-Hellenic Phase to the Early Stages of Colonization.” The presentations will conclude with Dr Teresa E. Cinquantaquattro, Ministry of Culture, Head of Service II – Archaeological Excavations and Protection of Archaeological Heritage, who will give a presentation entitled “Pithekoussai: Intercultural Dynamics between the Greek Colonial World and Indigenous Communities.”

The meeting will open with greetings from Alessandra Vinciguerra, President of the William Walton Foundation and Giardini La Mortella. The presentations will be moderated by Dr Mariangela Catuogno, Scientific Director of the Kepos Project.
